The City of Emeryville has activated new pedestrian safety improvements at Powell Street and Christie Avenue.
The southbound Christie Avenue approach now includes an electronic No Right Turn on Red / Yield to Pedestrians sign and a 10-second Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI). The LPI gives pedestrians a head start before vehicles receive a green light, while the sign helps manage turning conflicts at the crosswalk.
A similar treatment is planned for the eastbound approach in October 2026.
Pedestrian safety at Powell Street and Christie Avenue has been a long-standing priority for the City and its Transportation and Sustainability Committee, and has appeared on the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee's annual priority list since at least 2016. The intersection was also identified as a collision hotspot through the City's Active Transportation Plan and Local Roadway Safety Plan.
The Local Roadway Safety Plan found that approximately 60 percent of pedestrian collisions citywide occurred while pedestrians were crossing in a crosswalk at an intersection and recommends treatments such as Leading Pedestrian Intervals and No Right Turn on Red restrictions.
These improvements put those recommendations into practice and are part of the City's ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety at priority locations.
