Obsidian hydration

Obsidian absorbs water (hydrates) over time and gradually develops a "rind," representing the extent that the water has penetrated. Scientists can cut a small slice out of the edge of a tool and measure the hydrated band to estimate the time since the tool was made. Since obsidian from different sources hydrates at different rates, this is usually an approximate way to compare the age of tools.
