Stratigraphy

The arrangement of layers (or strata) of soil and midden as found in the ground or in an archaeological site. Since we know that the lower layers in most circumstances are those that were deposited 1st, examination of the sequence of layers can provide a story of the sequence of use of the site. Singular of strata is stratum, a single layer.
