Murals Program

The Public Art Master Plan adopted in 2016 identifies a Murals Program among the conceptual programs and projects that may be undertaken. The Public Art Committee has drafted a set of program guidelines to provide a means for evaluating dissemination of Public Art funds for both public murals and public/private partnership mural projects. Read the full Murals Program Guidelines here. In 2018 the City piloted the Mural program with a commission of a mural on private property on the Emeryville Greenway; to learn more about this work see the Emeryville Greenway Mural Pilot Program page.

Two more murals followed under the program in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, Pangea Seed Foundation hosted a seawalls mural festival adding 15 new murals throughout Emeryville. See here for a map and links to the artists who donated their time to create these beautiful and thought-provoking murals.

These works combined with murals added in compliance with the City’s Art in Public Places obligations and other impetuses have resulted in over 40 murals in Emeryville (75% on exterior walls and 25% in interior spaces). These works can be seen here

In 2022, the City initiated a Visual Grants program for small scale projects outside the scope of commissioned works, three additional murals/mosaics are proposed by the inaugural grantees.
